A Message from Long-Term Detainees to Japanese Society
~ Re-detention after mere 13 days of provisional release: back on a hunger strike at their breaking points ~
#FREEUSHIKU received a phone call from two Iranians, Majid Seyed Nejat, 51, and Shahram Khani, 37, who were re-detained in the East Japan Immigration Center after a short period of provisional release as a "warning to the other detainees." Before they were provisionally released, they had waged a hunger strike, protesting against the long-term detention in the center, and suffered a sharp decrease in weight. Their release period was too short to recover from their damage. They requested us on the phone to tell their message to the Japanese society.
"At present, more than 100 detainees are still on the hunger strike. The two of us were re-detained after the 13-day-provisional release, even though we hadn't recovered physically nor mentally yet. We resumed the hunger strike right after the re-detention. Now we have lost our weight again by 7 kg. (#FREEUSHIKU asked them if they intake some salt.) We try licking some salt, but if we are forced to stay here..... What are we supposed to do? We really don't know what the Immigration Center wants to do. Do they want to take our lives away? If not, we want freedom. Everyone, thank you for keeping your eyes on our situations. Journalists also came here. Everybody, please, please pay your attention to our circumstances."
(2019.8.5 evening, over the phone to #FREEUSHIKU )
Emergency Joint Statement released by Japan Lawyers Network for Refugees and “Hammersmith Promise” (Attorneys Fighting Against Mandatory Detention Policy) explains the severe human rights violations against the two people.

In June, volunteer members of #FREEUSHIKU already got information from the two that Shahram lost his weight by 18kg and was getting hard to walk, and that Majid was suffering from arthralgia at his right hand, low back pain due to hernia, insomnia and tinnitus. They wanted us to spread their information through the internet or the media.
Whatever the case may be, long and indefinite detention is nothing more than torture, as the United Nations Committee advised. Shahram and Majid have their reasons that they are unable to return to their home country. For them, living in Japan is a "chance to keep living." The Immigration Center should immediately stop driving them to the hunger strike again. We demand their release.
